Roots.
Growing up in the west, Topo founders Jedd Rose and Mark Hansen had always been interested in not only spending time outside, but also in the gear needed to get out. They found themselves wishing there was a company offering a lineup a bit more like the gear they grew up using—classic styling, functionality, durability and a clear connection with the brand behind the product. So in 2008, Jedd bought a sewing machine and began concepting, designing, and sewing packs in his Fort Collins basement, while Mark set out around Denver and the front range looking for resources and partners needed to build those designs. They were lucky enough to find local Colorado folks that were just getting started like them and were willing to build companies together, and worked with them to produce Topo Designs’ initial offering of products, continuing to work with them to this day.
Sustainability.
At Topo Designs every design cycle begins with a clear direction on the sustainable characteristics desired in our material families. Their goal over the next 3 to 5 years is to reduce the amount of virgin materials used every season, driving towards a line of packs and bags made completely of recycled materials. The apparel line is currently highlighted with components like GlobalWool™ consisting of 65% recycled Italian wool, Tee shirts are built with 100% organic cotton, and the recycled fleece is supplied by innovative mills focused on reducing microfiber release.
The long-term vision for process improvement is to reduce waste, harmful chemical use and energy consumption. The introduction of Topo's Dirt Collection is an example boasting all three, where utilizing a garment dyeing process along with specifying GreenScreen Certified chemicals has directly resulted in a reduction of water and energy use, as well as waste creation. As applicable in the rest of the Topo apparel line, the brand specifies the use of low-impact dyes, water-based inks and minimal additives during washing and drying processes to further reduce environmental and human impact.
Manufacturing, in the USA and beyond.
In 2008, Topo Designs began with designing and sewing packs in founder Jedd Rose’s Fort Collins basement. They were lucky enough to find local Colorado folks that were just getting started and willing to build their companies together. Together, they produced the initial offering of products and still do to this day. Products made in the USA are and always will be an important part of Topo Designs.
Topo's goals is always to create hard working utilitarian masterpieces. They search long and hard for talented partners to help build their products. Whether it's classic packs in Colorado, organic cotton tees in Mexico, insulation pieces in Canada, or technical shells in Vietnam, Topo's partners are the most talented people on the globe.
